Farming Technique
- Gray Bumpers will always take 5 hits to KO
- Touching a gray will momentarily push it forward or backwards (away from you) on its track
- Any bump will send your machine to the side. Use the opposite trigger to cancel this push, or use Goose.
- There are two main ways to combo grays: speed matching and plowing through
Spinning
- Spinning will increase your hitbox
- Spinning increases the distance the gray momentarily moves from its track
- Spinning will reduce your damage and stun; this works against reds as well
Speed Matching
The most consistent way to KO a gray is to match it's speed and position
- You can control your own speed by spinning carefully against a gray. The gray will momentarily move, but you can wait at it's original location for the next hit
- You can easily touch a gray multiple times from the side using the triggers
- Sliding with the triggers will also reduce your speed, great if you're moving too fast
- Advanced: Use snap turns to follow a gray around a corner. Touching a gray will stun your machine from receiving inputs, so just input a snap turn before your controls get frozen. The stun will end at the same time the snap turn completes
- It can be hard to maintain, so line yourself up and boost into the final hit
Plowing Through
This is mostly possible through using boost, using Goose, or both.
- You can stack momentary pushes, so you can force a gray to match your speed
- If you fail to combo, the gray will appear to teleport back to it's original position
- This works in reverse; i.e. try parking in front of a gray, but don't miss
- Advanced You can plow into a gray with a boost from the side and crash into a wall. Your machine will ricochet between the gray and the wall. It's a lot of bump and fun.
Do Both for a Full Combo
As Fox, a full speed spin without boost will push the gray forward and reduce your speed just enough for the next hit to connect. As Goose, it's better to collide head on and hold your spin until the third or fourth hit after you've lost some speed.
Farming Grays with Other Players
- Practice by inviting your friends to a private KO lobby
- Kill steal grays with a boost and you'll earn your boost back
- Spin through crowds to stay closer to the gray than anyone else. If you touch the gray twice, you'll be twice as likely to receive the final hit and KO
- Changing the gray's position will only affect the gray on your client. This can lead to scenarios where you've pushed a gray forward, but the gray is stolen from a player behind you since the gray hasn't moved on anyone else's client. In other words, if you see a smoking gray and a player in front of it, chances are the gray will be gone by the time you commit your boost.
- Learn when you can prioritize a gray over placement. How much placement are you willing to lose for a gray? e.g. t's hard to hit grays when they're on the outside of a turn because your frozen direction will jam you into the wall -- port town is the worst. You could slow way down, plow into the wall, or skip.
